§ 15-16. Operation of golf carts and low-speed vehicles.

  • (a)

    Definitions. The terms "golf cart" and "low-speed vehicle" shall be used synonymously in this section.

    (b)

    Operational requirements and restrictions. The following use, operational requirements and restrictions are adopted for low-speed vehicles based upon rules of the road applicable to motor vehicles set forth in LA R.S. 32:1 et seq.:

    (1)

    Any low-speed motor vehicle operated upon any divided highway, roadway, or street may be operated by anyone who is at least seventeen (17) years of age and possess a valid driver's license.

    (2)

    Golf carts shall not be operated on a street in a negligent manner as to endanger any person or property, or to obstruct, hinder, or impeded the lawful course of travel of any motor vehicle or the lawful use by a pedestrian on public streets, sidewalks, paths, trails, walkways, or parks.

    (3)

    Golf carts shall be operated in accordance with all traffic regulations, signs and signals.

    (c)

    Penalty for violation. Any person found in violation of the provisions of this section by a court of competent jurisdiction shall be fined not more than one hundred ($100.00) dollars or imprisoned for not more than thirty (30) days in the parish jail, or both fined and imprisoned at the discretion of the court.
