§ 17-10. Electioneering.

  • (a)

    Legislative findings. The parish council finds that there is a danger to the public health, safety and welfare when people electioneer while on or in public streets, roads or highways on the day of any election, special, general or primary.

    (b)

    Definitions. As used in this section the following words have the following meanings:

    Electioneering: The solicitation of any person to vote for or against any candidate or proposition being voted on in an election. It includes, without limitation, the handing out, placing or displaying of campaign cards, pictures, sample ballots, political signs or other forms of political advertising.

    Street, road and highway means the entire width between the boundary lines of every way or place of whatever nature publicly maintained and open to the use of the public for the purpose of vehicular travel, including bridges, causeways, tunnels and ferries.

    (c)

    Electioneering prohibited. It shall be unlawful for any person to electioneer while on or in any street, road or highway within the parish on the day of any election, special, general or primary.

    (d)

    Penalties. Any person who violates this section shall, upon conviction, be punished by a fine of not more than two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00), or imprisoned in the parish jail for not more than thirty (30) days, or both.
